USANA Announces Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2011 Financial Results.

USANA releases their Fourth Quarter 2011 Earnings today. In a nutshell, it is business as usual. Declining United States active associates, declining preferred customers world wide, and increasing Asian active associates. USANA made an error on the number of customers in China and took them an entire year to correct it. USANA continues to claim they are working hard with North American distributor leaders to stop the declining numbers, but they make these claims almost every single quarter. USANA has contests every quarter to encourage associate recruiting. It's all about the active associate data.

I don't think the fourth quarter was much to brag about. Here are some interesting facts:
Year over year, USANA lost 12000 customers (active associates & preferred customers combined) for a 4% decline. However, USANA managed to make $8.4 million more in revenue for a 6.1% gain. I believe this is due to USANA's increase in associate fees to activate a business center. USANA calls it a product purchase, but distributors are required to personally purchase over $200 worth of product before they can participate in the compensation plan and receive commissions. Many associates purchase the Professional Package for $1200 in hopes their business can make them rich.

Quarter over quarter, USANA gained 6000 customers for a 2.1% increase. USANA also made $2.4 million more in revenue for a 1.7% increase. Doesn't seem like much, but at least from quarter to quarter the revenue seems proportional to the number of active customers. Certainly nothing to brag about

My favorite line out of USANA's press release announcing their fourth quarter 2011 earnings report is this little footnote at the end that states the following:
3. The Preferred Customer count as of January 1, 2011 has been updated to correct an inaccuracy reported for BabyCare under Greater China. The Preferred Customer count previously reported for BabyCare was 14,000, which brought the Preferred Customer count for Greater China to 16,000. These numbers have been corrected to 7,000 for BabyCare, and 9,000 for Greater China. This correction represents a change of 7,000 to total Preferred Customers reported as of January 1, 2011.
USANA overstated their Babycare preferred customers by 100%. That is a huge error. They claimed they had twice as many preferred customers for their newest territory than they actually had. Their preferred customers for that territory has been declining ever since. Interesting that USANA used the excuse last year when their Babycare numbers had declined and blamed it on Chinese New Years. Where were USANA's auditors, sleeping??? It took USANA an entire year to correct this error. Can we trust USANA when they claimed they had 12,000 BabyCare associates during that same time?

Here's some information stockholders may not hear about but could have unseen consequences. USANA's latest contest "USANA in China: Rewards for Referrals" is one that pays associates for referring a Chinese National who joins BabyCare. I thought it was illegal to pay MLM distributors for recruiting. Has the Direct Sellers Association lobbied for that change as well? Here is a quote from this contest:
You have to be a Chinese National Citizen to build a business with USANA in China, but you can still benefit from the lucrative bonus possibilities available to other USANA Associates. With the USANA Partnership Program, you will receive a residual bonus for every qualified person you refer to USANA in China who begins building a business.

The USANA Partnership Program is better than anything you’ve seen in the past—instead of a one-time bonus, you will receive an ongoing percentage of everything your referrals generate. Although you can’t add Chinese National Citizens to your own downline, you can still make residual income from the points they generate as they build their own businesses in China!
It is against China's law for MLMs to recruit Chinese Nationals into the downline of these pyramid schemes. So USANA has devised a way to circumvent China's laws. Instead of these Chinese Nationals being placed into a downline, they are simply left out of their sponsor's downline while still generating “residual income” for that sponsor. So a USANA distributor in the US can recruit a Chinese National into BabyCare in China and still collect commission from that Chinese National. However, China has outlawed MLMs from participating in their country. I believe this is breaking China's law. Plus, I believe it breaks US laws by paying a commission to the distributor for simply recruiting the Chinese National. Paid to recruit...

I still hold true to the belief that USANA is operating an illegal pyramid scheme where associates are forced to purchase overpriced product (that cannot be retailed for any kind of profit) in order to collect commissions. The majority of revenue made by USANA and the majority of commissions paid (mainly to the top 1% of associates) comes from the hundreds of thousands of distributors who are all purchasing product in order to be "commission Eligible" and participate in the business venture. If USANA did either (1) removed the requirement to personally purchase any product in order to collect commission, or (2) did not pay out commissions to upline members for the product personally purchased by distributors (because they are forced to purchase the product in the first place), then USANA would no longer be a pyramid scheme. However, if USANA actually did either of those two things, the company would go out of business in just a couple months because only those who actually want to purchase product would, which I believe most would not.

Most associates would stop purchasing product because almost every associate that has quit the business has also stopped purchasing the product. In fact, most people who have either tried USANA's business opportunity or joined as a preferred customer have stopped purchasing USANA's product and left the company. That says a lot about the company and the product.

  1. I was hoping this analysis of the quarter 4 financials and year end reporting of Usana would include more information on: the wholesale cost of Usana's supplements compared to the retail cost so readers could see just how overpriced the products are; the announcements of new markets in Thailand and France; and a more indepth analysis of the forever changing comp plan designed to make it very difficult for associates to make any money in the business.

Usana likes to promote they have supplements for all kinds of health issues, but was wondering if there is any concrete scientific evidence that shows if taking 20+ vitamin pills a day is harmful or has been proven to produce a benefit.

Not surprised the number of associates has dropped significantly here in America. Even with the new endorsement deals of Dr. OZ, nascar, hollywood celebrities, etc, the company still can't grow there business here in America.

Any news yet on how the new Ariix company is doing now that it has been in business since January and anymore high profile Usana defections to Ariix?

    Thanks.

    1. I am in the process of creating the latest Trends report that shows a graph of the associate and preferred customer numbers over several years. In that I will critique each region and give my 2 cents. As for Dr. Oz, I have information about that as well and will eventually post it as well. I haven't looked at Ariix for several months now. I'll take a look at it when I get a chance. I can barely find enough time to write articles on this blog right now. Family and work take up 115% of my time, so I'm beginning to age more quickly:) And for those who think I get paid to write on this blog, I do not and it doesn't count as my "work" time.

  2. "...distributors are required to personally purchase over $200 worth of product before they can participate in the compensation plan and receive commissions."

Wait, so it's no longer $100 or are you referring to associates who have more than one business center? I believe the $200 for more than 1 business center was always there. I can't see how Usana can possibly increase their $100 minimum to $200 just for one business center. Am I missing something here?

    1. I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. This is the initial purchase requirement after a new distributor signs up. It is their "activation" amount. It went from 150 PSV to 200 PSV, where 1 PSV costs on average $1.21... So it is more like around $240 to activate their business center. I just used $200 as a conservative number.

After this initial purchase, only 100 PSV each month is required for a single business center, 200 PSV for multiple business centers.

That increase may be responsible for the disproportionate increase in sales even though they lost 12,000 active customers. They could have also sold more professional packs, ($1200 initial purchase). USANA does not disclose this information and stock analysts are inept to ask.

  3. Usana watchdog, this is the first commentor asking for info on Ariix etc. Thank you very much taking time away from your family to write this blog. It is very informative and provides a very real perspective on Usana and MLM in general. Don't know how you find the time to do this, but we sincerely appreciate it.

  4. Thanks USANA watchdog, this page is great!!! I do believe in the Network Industry, but the truth is that 95% of the people that join this industry won't make any money, in USANA is 99% of the people!!! And that's what "leaders" don't tell and they suck everything they can and then they tell you that!!! So its great that someone speaks up and tell the the facts!! As I say, I'm not against USANA or the industry, just people need to be aware about the good and bad things before they make a decision!!

  5. I live in Rockford, IL manufacturing own that has been hit by the tough economy. Usana is huge here!!!!! I get hit up all the time to by the products and the whole break down of the business countless times. I tried the essentials which was $40 and took 4 pills a day I felt more tired and noticed my urine glowed in the dark because I was just pissing $40 back out. I take the basic multi-vitamin from gnc that's $30 for 2 months. I do like usana's meal replacement shakes but not for $30 for 1 bag. I took to ebay and was able to get 5 bags for $80. Usana distributors get so angry if you tell them you buy the products off ebay.

  6. thanks for all of the time you put in . I have no interest in USANA, but I notice they have recruited many young Asians here in Australia. Very worrying. Keep up the good work

    1. It is because the Asians are prepared to WORK the business. Most Australians would not get off their asses if their pants were on fire. They are so used to welfare they think that starting a business means you open one and then the Government pays you to keep it open. I have been in MLM for many years - and love it. However, it is very clear to me that the majority of distributors in ALL MLM companies look at it as a get-rich-quick scheme, which it is NOT! It is a get rich scheme, but, like any business, you have to follow the guidelines and WORK at it until you gain expertise. Every millionaire has failed again and again - often spectacularly - but the winners are those who learn from their mistakes and realise that it takes TIME to learn all the skills to run any business successfully. MLM gives ordinary folks this chance, but sadly, most of them who join are too impatient and if they have not made a fortune in 12 months, they give up and go elsewhere - to fail again, because they are refusing to learn from their mistakes. It is like the fools who buy lottery tickets at odds of millions to one!- but they keep buying, because they are too lazy to WORK for a living.

    2. You are a great representative of the USANA sales force. A self righteous bigot.

So tell me, what do you think it means to "WORK the business"? Seems this line gets used a lot amongst USANA distributors, but NONE of them have ever dared to actually describe what it means as a MLM distributor... GOOD LUCK!

    3. I'm happy to tell you what it means to work the business as a "MLM distributor." It means sharing an opportunity with those who are worthy or capable to create a small business. "USANA Watch Dog" is simply a malcontent who does not wish to control her own destiny. She would rather be a salaried employee (a single stream of income) than take the risk/opportunity of setting up her own business. Yes -- it is tough. Yes -- there is a lot of rejection. Yes -- you do have to talk to a LOT of people to find entrepreneurs. Yes -- a lot of people quit.

    4. Not everyone wants to start their own business? Not everyone is interested? Many people are salaried employees but still make a decent living and that's enough for them. This is just my personal opinion, I've tried to give these companies a try before, but it's not my thing at all. To each their own peace.

  7. Thank you for all that you do on this blog, USANA watchdog.

Unfortunately, my girlfriend's sister is convinced she'll get rich quick and easy from becoming a USANA associate. She is in the process of doing so right now and already preaching about how great their products are. I can usually smell a scam from miles away, and this one definitely threw up red flags as soon as I heard the first couple sentences of company rhetoric come out of her mouth.

Here's hoping that your insight and investigation will convince her to reconsider.

    1. It sounds like your Sister is the only one who is intelligent enough to know a brilliant business opportunity when she sees one. I have had my Usana business for 11 years and paid my taxes like any other business and now I have a residual income that I can rely on. Also you help your team to earn money so maybe you should look into it, and stop being so ignorant.

    2. Brilliant business opportunity???? Come on, there are better and more friendly associate compensation plans in the industry.. Usana compensation plan is good, very good for the Wentz family.. Usana associates claim they are business people, they act more like religious fanatics... Good work Usana Watchdog!!!

  8. in order for you to earn in this business you must be very industrious just like in any business. others stop because their just lazy and expect to earn right away without doing anything! my family now live comfortably because of my earnings in usana. Its all worth it!

  9. You can be rich in Usana but only at the expense of hundreds of friends and family who bought a package based on trust. Trust that is hard to gain back. Friends you will lose. And the more you stay in the more time and $ you invest into being brainwashed by the Diamond directors that make all the $. If you hit a position at the expense of your friends and get a commision. The person on top that is brainwashing you gets all the points. Then you use that commision to pay for autoship and those points go up to the the diamonds that are running trainings that take your money at hotels. Then brainwash the brainpower out of you with yelling with brainwashed associates who are broke. they say being broke is a challenge. If you havent bought that Pro pack you wouldn't have the challenge of being broke and challenges of friends staying away from you in the first place. They post all these quotes on facebook that will trick your mind. Well heres a quote for all you brainwashed USANA reps. "If you are too positive.. then you can't see the negative thats preventing you from having a positive life".... fckADTM

  10. I am just preached to buy a package of USANA products to activate this business thing but I haven't totally gave in.. Please help me decide if I should go for it.. I hate pyramiding but they make people believe that it's not..cuz they said they will help me grow the business, team effort something like that..

    1. Sorry anonymous - I would not ask you to join my team. You don't have the confidence and sphere of influence to create a profitable business for you and your team. Come back when you grow a pair.

    2. Try the product first. Ask your distributor a copy of the healing or detoxification process. You can take it once a day for one week as it may be too much and too soon for you. You will buy it at retail price. If the result is good and you love the product, you can try it with your family. If your family regularly consumes it, it's time for you to cut the profit of your distributor and be a distributor yourself buying the product for your consumption at a distributor's price. Why force yourself to sell if you don't want to? It is your greed that will make you disappointed.

  11. To grow your business, your job will be to solicit others to join the business and have them purchase product to active their business as well. That's what it means to "grow" your business. Your means of commission will steam from how many associates you have "balanced" in your downline, who are all making product purchases to activate and keep active their business.

That's a pyramid scheme by all means.

And about 8 out of 10 people who join USANA quit within the first year. So you will be required to recruit more and more people just to replace those who quit.

    GOOD LUCK!

  12. Who's USANA watchdog btw?

  13. anything that involves internet is traditional method for usana thats crazy!...the more appropriate method for them is personally approaching the people and selling to friends and family who are usually not interested in the product...and even more uninterested to start an mlm business!

whatever you do, usana will ask around if you have a website and even customers will call usana and give your name..then usana calls you and tells you you cant do this and that and its not allowed! yes...they will investigate you...

so how can i call it my own business? i cant make a move without them calling me which is annoying!

you need to find the right kind of people to put in your downline... and you can only do that on the internet so people will ask you...apparently this stupid company doesnt believe that!

  14. How bout the Albert Einstein Award that was given to Usana? Me & my family have tried the products & it really does meet our expectations.. all the health benefits stated were all true that is why we are still taking it & have also joined. So I believe that Usana is #1 because they're for real & has been awarded for their great contribution in science & in the soceity. People are smart, they would know if Usana is just a scam, the fact that after trying the products they come back thankful of the results is because they themselves tried & tested it. I think you should also try it. :)

    1. Myron Wentz's "Einstein award" was given by Global Capital Associates, an investment firm that has nothing to do with science and ceased to exist the year after they gave the made up fictitious award to Myron.
